I must say this – I feel like an Olympian already (though by no means I did anything close to what real Olympians do). For someone, who has always dreamt of running a full marathon one day, this was a baby step towards my dream. A half marathon (21.1kms), with a finishing time of nearly 3 hours isn’t something to brag about, but the resultant joy that I derived out of it, is definitely disproportionate to what I achieved.
The marathon was well arranged & well conducted. Right from the beginning it had all the elements of a successfully organized event. IIT Madras did lend it’s splendor & grandeur to the cause & boy – it did come out beautifully. The volunteers did their job to perfection & never let the participants left out on their own. Everybody was attended to & assisted in the best possible manner.
Running with a crowd has always got it’s own charm. One could always feed on the crowd’s energy to pull on, even if he/she feels tired & is on the verge of giving up. This would never happen if one’s running alone (unless he/she has got the steely resolve of the likes of Rocky Balboa).
By the time I crossed over the finishing line – I had aching feet, a stiff neck (yeah – a stiff neck from running) & bruised knees. But then the little kids in their cute little costumes came over to put the medals around my neck – and I felt like a winner (just for the record – I was amongst the last few to finish the race, but still).
Now, I intend to practice harder & put up a better show the next time I enroll myself in a marathon. And I know for sure, that age isn’t a limiting factor anymore – for I came across many gentlemen in their late 50’s & early 60’s striding along with the grace of a gazelle & without as much as a huffing/puffing. That gives me enough motivation to last a very long time.
It wouldn’t be fair, if I didn’t acknowledge the effort our organization put in, to make this a memorable event. I truly felt proud when I saw my comrades running along in blues & whites with Tata Consultancy Services emboldened on their back.
Someday – I intend to run with a bigger crowd, a longer distance with a better looking timing. And I hope – that it happens someday and doesn’t just remain as an intention!!
